Newport-Mesa Receives Statewide Recognition for Communication Outreach

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) received statewide recognition from three of California's leading public relations organizations.

  • California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA) 

    • Award of Excellence - Crisis Communication related to an anti-Semitic student incident 

    • Award of Merit - multimedia/visual communication for Early College High School 

  • Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) 

    • Polaris Award - Early College High School promotional video

  • California Public Information Officer Association 

    • Award of Merit - Early College High School promotional video

Award of Excellence: District Defeats Anti-Semitism with Education and Dialogue 

NMUSD received a 2020 California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA) Award of Excellence for communication efforts to defeat anti-Semitism through student education and community dialogue. The Award of Excellence is the highest distinction available in the awards program. This award spotlighted NMUSD’s quick, proactive response and ongoing stream of actions and community updates to bring school and community together to foster cultural understanding and appreciation of all faiths, cultures, and differences among our diverse community.  

CalSPRA is a nationally recognized leader in school communications that promotes better public understanding, commitment, and support of public education through effective communications. The CalSPRA Awards program recognizes the successful efforts of education agencies and the communication professionals in producing materials and services that meet the information needs of communities throughout California. 

Early College High School Promotional Video

Award of Merit (CalSPRA)

NMUSD received a 2020 California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA) Award of Merit in the category of multimedia/visual communication, in recognition of the Early College High School (ECHS) Promotional Video. The ECHS video highlights the school’s differentiators from a traditional high school and shifts the perception of what a college preparatory high school can offer. By using personal and positive stories to support non-traditional schools and showcase the great attributes of ECHS, enrollment for the following school year increased by nearly 30 percent.

Polaris Award (PRSA)

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) awarded the ECHS promotional video the 2019 Polaris Award. The Polaris Awards recognize exemplary public relations efforts that successfully incorporate effective research, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This award represents the highest standards of performance in the public relations and communications profession. PRSA is the nation’s leading professional organization in the communications industry.

The ECHS promotional video also received the 2020 California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) - Epic Award in the category of Video Production Long Form. CAPIO’s EPIC awards program recognizes the most creative and effective efforts in all areas of communication. Entries are evaluated against standard scoring criteria and judging is based on the quality of craft. This year’s judges included communications peers from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers. CAPIO is a statewide organization dedicated to supporting public sector communicators across all levels of government.
