Career Technical Education (CTE)

CTE is a program of study that involves a multiyear sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to post-secondary education and careers.

CTE will engage every student in high-quality, rigorous and relevant educational pathways and programs developed in partnership with business and industry, that promotes creativity, innovation, leadership, community service and lifelong learning. CTE allows students to turn their passions into paychecks- their dreams into careers.

Mission

The mission of CTE is to provide industry-linked programs and services that enable all individuals to reach their career goals, in order to achieve economic self-sufficiency. They also teach and guide students to compete in the global marketplace and contribute to California's economy prosperity.

Course Sequence

PAtient Care Pathway

Health Science Fundamentals: Introduction to Medical Professions

This is the first class of the EMA sequence and offered to students in the fall semester of year 10. As a sophomore, students will learn the basic fundamentals of health sciences, as well as the medical profession. Students will learn how to accurately and appropriately obtain vital signs, make beds, wash hands, and how to medical communicate with patients. Students will also learn basic and professional etiquette that will make them good qualified candidates for the medical field. This class also teaches students many different types of medical professions and explains the education, the expectation, financial rewards, as well as the many colleges and universities that offer these medical professions. This class involves many guest speakers from various different medical professions to hear personal stories and background.

Medical Terminology

This is the second class of the EMA sequence and offered to students in the spring semester of year 10. As a second semester sophomore, students will learn the basic medical terminology to make them successful in the medical field. Medical terminology is said to the be the foundation of medicine. Each chapter of this class is a body system. Students learn the basic anatomy and physiology of each body system, as well as the associated medical terminology related to that body system. Students learn the basic medical diseases and complications that could arise from each body system as well. There are close to 100 medical words for every chapter, and though we won't be hitting all, we will be hitting most.

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

This the third class of the EMA sequence and offered to students for one full year as a junior. This class is specially designed for students looking to venture into the emergency medical services field. EMR is a course that teaches students the basic emergency procedures for patients experiencing a true emergent medical issue. Students learn the basic signs and symptoms of each medical emergency and learn how to treat patients based on those signs and symptoms. Students also learn how to treat what they see. They learn how to conduct physical exams, medical exams, how to perform CPR and use the AED. They are also taught about every other type of emergency related injuries including but not limited to pediatric emergencies, geriatric emergencies, and how to deal with mass casualty incidents and terrorist attacks. In this class, students are given the opportunity to come and ride along on a fire engine, fire truck, or ambulance, and/or shadow me on the trauma team in the emergency department.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 

As a junior, students that take the Emergency Medical Responder class will each have the opportunity to pass and complete all steps required to receive an official American Heart Association CPR card. With this card, students are able to perform infant/child/adult CPR and are able to officially use the AED (Automatic External Defibrillator.)

*Disclaimer- Students that join this class will be shown graphic images to help with real-life practice. Students that participate in ride-along opportunities and/or trauma shadow may be exposed to true medical emergencies that are inevitable to the job.

Sports Medicine

This is the fourth and last class of the EMA sequence. Sports Medicine is offered to senior students only. This class is specially designed for students looking to venture into the sports medicine field as an athletic trainer, physical trainer, physical therapist, etc. In this class, students learn the introduction in care prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. They learn the basic skills and fundamentals of sports medicine, including how to prevent athletic injuries, and increase athletic performance. Students also study body mechanics and nutritional guidelines for maximizing performance. Students learn how to tape and brace, learn the psychological aspects of competition, training, and learn basic and advanced conditioning techniques. Students that take this course, may be eligible for UC/CSU credit if passed with a 70% or better. This class suffices for the "D" category for the A-G graduation requirement.

CTE Medallion

Requirements

The purpose of the CTE Medallion program is to acknowledge graduating seniors who demonstrate superior performance in their chosen career technical education (CTE) pathway.  These are basic requirements that all students who desire this award must meet.  In addition, each site will be allowed to add additional requirements as appropriate.  The basic requirements used district-wide are:

  1. Successful completion of all courses that comprise a specific, district recognized CTE pathway, such that a minimum of five (5) courses are completed of which two (2) are either ROP or college.
     
  2.  Participation in one (1) internship, job shadow and/or mentorship related to that specific CTE pathway for a minimum of 20 hours.  Verification of the above requirements will be left to each site’s CTE leadership team.  These requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis to accommodate newly developing pathways and/or other special circumstances.  Students will be able to wear their CTE medallions over their gowns on graduation day. (If you compete in HOSA at the State Leadership Conference, you may use the hours in lieu of the internship)
